X-α-gal (5-Bromo-4-Chloro-3-indolyl-α-D-galactopyranoside) is a chromogenic substance used to demonstratingα-galactosidase activity. Thus yeast S. cerevisiae which are positive for this enzyme produce blue colonies when grown in the presence of X-α-gal. Used in yeast two-hybrid screens. X-α-gal can be dissolved in DMF at a concentration of 2 mg/ml for premade plates or 20 μg/ml for indicator plates.

CytoBLUE™ is designed for screening of α galactocidase detection that is often used in yeasts and other genetic models instead of beta gal. This ready to use solution is economical, produces sharper contrasts and has a richer color making it ideal for automated colony pickers as well manual visual selections.
